It doesn’t feel like it, but winter in New England is nearly upon us. Every year we are pounded with layer after layer of beautiful white snow. But did you know that 20 inches of snow is roughly equal to 5.5 tons? Yes, tons! That’s a lot of weight for a roof to endure, never mind when all that snow melts. It’s no wonder that it’s critical that you make sure your roof is in good shape, or you’ll wind up asking yourself, “will my roof withstand the winter weather?”
Look for these 7 clues to know if your roof can withstand the winter and resources to prevent winter damages.
1. Age
How old is your roof? Although younger roofs can have problems as well, an older roof is more likely to fail. If your roof is more than 20 years old, it’s time to think about replacing it.
2. Stains, Leaks, and Gaps
If you notice a ceiling stain, it could be a sign that your roof is damaged and leaking. Make sure the cause of the stain is definitely from your roof and not another source.
Look for sunlight shining through your roof boards. Gaps in your roofing mean that one, or many, of your roofing boards may be worn out or rotting, and will eventually begin leaking.
A roof leak is a surefire sign that your roof is in need of some repair or even replaced. Your roof’s flashing, the metal that prevents water from leaking into your home, or worn out boards, should be immediately repaired to prevent further, more costly, damages.
3. Damaged Flashing
Your roof’s flashing redirects water flow from coming into your home. If your roof’s flashing gets damaged, other parts of your roof and house can also get damaged. On a sunny day, go up to your attic and inspect under your chimney and stack vent for small holes of sunlight. If you see any sunlight coming through, your flashing is damaged and needs to be repaired.
4. Shingle Granules
Smooth dark areas on your shingles, or loose granules in your gutters, is a clear indication that your roof is getting older. The granules are what protect your shingles. The more granules a roof loses, the older it is, and more it needs to be replaced.
5. Deteriorating Sheathing
Your roof sheathing, the connection between the shingles and rafters, can start deteriorating. In your attic, inspect the underside of the sheathing for water stains or moist spots. If this is the case, it’s a good sign that it’s time to call a roofer.
6. Missing or Damaged Shingles
Bulking or curling shingles can be from many reasons including improper installation or defective materials.
Missing roofing shingles are never a good sign. Missing shingles can begin letting water leak into your home.
Whether you have bulking, curling, missing, or damaged roofing shingles, you’re in need of immediate repair or replacement by a professional.
7. Sagging
A sagging roof is in poor condition. If your roof is sagging, it’s weak and can lead to collapsing, especially under a heavy snowfall. Call a roofer right away.

Winter Roofing Issues
It’s important to inspect and keep an eye on your roof no matter what time of year it is. If you should notice any signs of damage, promptly repair the roof before more damage can occur. If the damage is beyond repair, seek assistance from a professional roofer and look into options for a replacement roof.
